Synopsis[]

Arc 1: The New World[]

(Chapters 1-7)

The story begins in Ed's room with Ed, Edd, Jonny, North, and Demi playing Lizards & Wizards while Eddy watches. An argument about fantasy and escapism leads to the topic of a portal experiment being conducted at the Peach Creek National Laboratory. After musing on the idea of traveling to a fantasy world, Eddy agrees to join their game, and the group disbands for the night.

The next day, events line up to bring the children of Peach Creek to the laboratory: Ed and Sarah pick Jimmy up from the orthodontist, then set out to return Demi's L&W character sheets. Edd and Demi are asked by their parents to bring files to the lab; Eddy accompanies the former. North, Rolf, Jonny and Plank go searching for North's missing cat, Jonesy. Kevin and Nazz go for a bike ride. The kids all converge within the lab's perimeter fence, where a resonant phenomenon causes each of them to disappear one by one.

The Eds, huddled together during the event, land in an unknown redwood forest. Braving the elements, trying and failing to find help, they camp on a cliff outcrop for the night. They discover two moons in the night sky and realize they are not on Earth anymore. The next day, after encountering strange wildlife from gryphons to sabertooths, the Eds stumble into a chamber containing the skeletal remains of dragons and three medallions. When Eddy touches them, the medallions emit spectral images of dragons that seem to faze through the Eds, then vanish.

Escaping the chamber, the Eds find and approach a campsite, but become entangled in snares. In their effort to escape, they unwittingly free a captured dragon that quickly flies away. They are then knocked unconscious by the trappers, a group of paladins seeking information about crystal dragons. The paladins are attacked and killed by knights of a neighboring kingdom, Kadia, some of whom pursue the dragon while the rest take the Eds captive. The sole surviving paladin, a squire named Carlisle, departs for his kingdom, Apetus.

The Eds wake up to find themselves part of a slave caravan. Though unable to communicate with the natives, they befriend an orc shaman named Ushug, who declares that the boys are "dragonhearts." Observing the knights, Edd starts to teach himself magic, conjuring a flame and healing the wounds Eddy receives from a whipping despite the anti-magic metal they are caged in. At the auction, the Eds nearly manage to escape, but are recaptured and promptly sold. Edd is separated from Ed and Eddy, winding up in the care of Terryn Broichan, an Apetian duke and abolitionist. He uses a spell to teach Edd the native language and explains a bit about the world they inhabit, Iaun.

Meanwhile, Ed and Eddy narrowly survive being used as prey in the Kadian Royal Hunt, but their skills and sudden ferocity lead the knights to recapture them for study. Dwennon Stillbane, a Kadian captain, recruits prisoner Aron Kitt to teach Ed and Eddy the native language, a spell that costs the sickly professor his life. In the process, Kitt teaches the two about crystal dragons – dragons infected and turned blind savage by anti-magic crystals – which he believes the Eds are destined to defeat. Later that night, Ed and Eddy escape with the aid of a red dragon named Edaeros and a thief named Jagger, but they wind up separated in the process. At the same time, Duke Broichan offers to fund Edd's schooling at the Edetany College of High Arcana.

Arc 2: The Call to Arms[]

(Coming soon.)

Characters[]

Peach Creek Natives[]

Ed: The fighter and the strongest of the Eds. While still lacking in general intelligence, Ed's loyalty, strength, stamina, and knowledge of the supernatural prove useful in their new environment. His low common sense gradually improves as he comes to understand the danger they're in.

Edd: The mage and the smartest of the Eds. Edd has difficulties coping with their situation, often doubting himself and fretting in the face of danger, but his tactical skills and high intellect continue to benefit the group as he studies their new world. He is the first to learn magic and ultimately the most proficient at it.

Eddy: The thief and the de facto leader of the Eds. Although he has given up his scamming ways in Peach Creek, Eddy is able to put his cunning and quick wits to good use as he approaches each challenge with caution to the wind. When those wits aren't getting him into trouble, at least.

North: A classmate who only recently befriended the Eds. North is a hyperactive lover of geek culture, an aspiring artist, and the Grand Wizard of his L&W campaign. Owns a cat named Jonesy.

Demi: North's childhood friend and fellow newcomer to the group. Demi typically displays a blunt, apathetic attitude, but is genuinely calm and low-key with a love of the weird and outlandish.

Jonny: The town oddball who spends most of his time outdoors. He still hangs out with Plank, both of whom are Urban Rangers.

Sarah: Ed's younger sister who, while displaying a bit more respect for her brother now, can still be bossy and short-tempered when provoked.

Jimmy: Sarah's insecure but often crafty best friend. At the time the story begins, his signature retainer has been removed. An Urban Ranger.

Rolf: The foreigner with odd customs and a small farm that he and his family tend to. The leader of his Urban Ranger troop.

Kevin: The town jock with a love for his bike. While not as much of a bully towards the Eds, Kevin can still be cynical and teasing.

Nazz: The trendy girl and the object of many boys' affection. As is hinted in the show, Nazz is proficient in karate.

Iaun Natives[]

Edaeros: A young red dragon who befriends Ed. He is on a mission to end the crystal blight that plagues dragonkind.

Dwennon Stillbane: Captain of the slave knights of Kadia. He is cunning, ruthless, and determined to learn the secrets of the crystal dragons.

Terryn Broichan: The Duke of Sullus – a duchy in Apetus – and Edd's surrogate father figure.

Rhona Broichan: Duke Broichan's daughter and a student at Edetany.

Jagger, the Whispering Jaculus: A member of the Hooded Cobras thieves guild who befriends Eddy. He seems to have an enchantment over him that makes people forget his name and presence.

Carlisle: An Apetian squire who, following the death of his mentor, sets out to aid the paladins in the coming war.

Rigurd Upton: The Baron of Shiwell, a town in Apetus.

Trivia[]

  • This story takes place post-Big Picture Show, hence the relationship between the Eds and their peers is more amicable. Apparently, Jonny has been welcomed back into the group as well.
  • The Peach Creek National Laboratory is a nod to the Hawkins National Laboratory in Stranger Things. Both are federal complexes set in rural towns whose experiments open rifts between worlds.
  • Lizards & Wizards is a reference to the game the Eds play in the comic Enchant-Ed Land, as well as the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons.
